The Sacred Heart Cathedral, known as the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or the Stone Chamber, is a Gothic Revival Roman Catholic cathedral in Guangzhou, China. Built entirely of granite, including walls, pillars, and twin towers, it’s a rare architectural gem. Originally the residence of the Viceroy of Guangdong, its construction began in 1861, following an agreement between the Qing government and the Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris. Despite challenges, including communication barriers and lack of machinery, the cathedral was completed in 1888, boasting a design reminiscent of European cathedrals. It’s the largest Roman Catholic church in Guangzhou, featuring a grand nave flanked by side chapels, clock and bell towers, and a rich history intertwined with international support, including funding from Napoleon III. Today, its towering presence and intricate craftsmanship make it a must-visit landmark in Guangzhou’s old town.
