Guangdong Museum
The Guangdong Museum in Guangzhou, China, is a treasure trove of Cantonese art, nature, culture, and history. Formerly located in Yuexiu District, it was situated on the original site of Sun Yat-sen University and comprised several buildings, including the Lu Xun Memorial Hall and an observatory.
The museum showcased diverse exhibitions, from Chaozhou wood carving to modern ceramic figures in the Shiwan style. Its historical section chronicled Guangzhou’s evolution from ancient times to the present, highlighting its role as a trade hub.
In 2010, the museum relocated to Zhujiang New Town as part of a cultural revitalization plan. The new building, inspired by traditional Cantonese ivory puzzle balls, features a multi-layered, transparent design symbolizing the region’s craftsmanship. Visitors navigate a spiral staircase, exploring historical artifacts, nature exhibits, and vernacular art collections.
With temporary exhibitions enriching the cultural landscape, the museum serves as a hub for artistic discovery and historical exploration, offering spaces for relaxation and administration amidst its architectural marvels.
Fun Fact: The logo of Guangdong Provincial Museum is inspired by the character “藏”, which has a lot of strokes, but can also be creative.
The logo is based on the design principle of “rooted in Guangdong, implying the meaning of “Bo”, containing the shape of the museum, and concentrating the spirit of the collection” (the end of the collection: “Guangdong Bo Collection”), and the design is based on the Chinese characters.
The logo implies the shape of “Guangdong” and the rhyme of “博”, which illustrates the geographical attributes and industrial characteristics of the Guangdong Provincial Museum, and with the finishing touch of “藏”, it embodies the functional attributes of the Guangdong Provincial Museum and the spirit of the people of the Guangdong Provincial Museum who specialize in collection, and highlights the logo of the Guangdong Provincial Museum and its style that embraces both the ancient and the modern.
