Changzhou Island
Travelling in Guangzhou China can be overwhelming and living in Guangzhou even more. Even though the city is called laid-back by locals, it is still a metropolis with lots of noises, smells and people. So it is good to know where to find an short escape from the bustling city center.
Changzhou Island lays just east of Haizhu Island, yet is much smaller and definitely much less developed in terms of how much people live there. The streets, parks and other attractions are all very well maintained, making it perfect for a weekend getaway in Guangzhou.
But attraction seeker be aware, there is nothing much going on. You can stroll around the riverside, run or ride around Changzhou Island and visit a few historical military sights of Guangzhou. That’s basically it.
Whampoa Military Academy
One of the historic military sights on Changzhou Island is Whampoa Military Academy, which is a historical military academy that has been restored and maintained as a museum. It severs some historical significance as Chiang Kai-Shek became leader of the Chinese Nationalist as Academy leader here.
Apart from the Whampoa Military Academy you can find several small forts with fortification, walls and cannons.
Changzhou Island also served as repair ground for Danish ship crews and there are still ships repaired and built today. Chinese, not Danish.
