Huge Lake in the middle of Haizhu
Are you looking for a peaceful break from Guangzhou’s busy streets? Haizhu Lake in Haizhu District could be your next destination. This lake is next to the larger Haizhu National Wetland Park. Despite being just a few kilometers from the city center, it offers a calm setting for walking, birdwatching, and picnicking.
Haizhu Lake is part of one of the largest urban wetland areas in Guangzhou. When you arrive, you might notice wooden walkways that lead through patches of reeds and small ponds. These paths help protect the wetlands while guiding visitors around different sections of the park. The lake itself is the centerpiece, with wide waters reflecting the surrounding greenery. It’s common to spot local residents practicing tai chi or families walking around, especially during weekends.
If you enjoy wildlife, bring your camera. Egrets, herons, and other waterbirds often stop by the lake. Local authorities have planted various plant species to create a balanced ecosystem that both people and animals can enjoy. The park also hosts occasional eco-tours and educational exhibits, which explain the importance of conserving wetlands in a fast-growing city.
Things to do

- Birdwatching: Want to see egrets up close? Several viewing spots around the lake let you watch birds feeding or nesting in the reeds.
- Picnicking: Benches and seating areas are scattered throughout the park. Pack a light meal or snack and relax by the water.
