Niu Tou Mountain (牛头山)
Ox-Head moutain, as it is named in chinese is a small but very steep hiking area. Connected to several other small moutains like Wushi mountain, you can easily find 20, 30 and even 50k trails in this area.
Here a example route, but there are routes on several hiking apps, foreign and chinese, but you can also just follow one of the several hiking groups. Hiking is a common activity and you can find many other groups without it being to crowded as Baiyun moutain for example.
There are also several trail run events held in Guangzhou, these trail races are often in the area around “Niu Tou Shan” the ox-head mountain.
There are some water stations on the peak and on the foot of the trail but we recommend anyone to take some snacks and drink as this area is much more a wild trail and not a paved road as Baiyun mountain.
The mountains do not have a high elevation but are close to each other, meaning you need to climb very steep parts very often. This can be challenging especially if you run them. I did my first trail run there and my legs died after 1/3 of the race.
Both of these hikes have been from Niutoushan passing Miuqiang Reservoir, which showcase why the area is a great place for hiking in Guangzhou.
