South China Botanical Garden
The South China National Botanical Garden, under the auspices of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stands as a prominent botanical research institution located in Guangzhou’s Tianhe District. Established in 1929 by renowned botanist Chen Huanyong, also known as Woon-young Chun, its expansive 1155-hectare expanse hosts over 2400 plant species, making it a hub for ecological, systematic, and evolutionary botany research, as well as biotechnology and landscape studies. The garden is organized into specialized collections, including greenhouses, alpine and Arctic plants, aquatic plants, and more. Additionally, it encompasses the Nursery and Exhibition Zone, the Research and Residential Zone, and the Dinghushan Nature Reserve, the latter being China’s first national nature reserve and the sole reserve affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The garden also houses the Long Dong Magic Forest, recognized as one of Guangzhou’s “Eight Top Scenic Spots,” and Guangzhou’s Oldest Village, featuring reconstructed Neolithic ruins. Notably, its Conservatory, shaped like a kapok tree, serves as Asia’s largest comprehensive conservatory, showcasing various plant species. With its extensive research achievements, educational initiatives, and conservation efforts, the South China National Botanical Garden serves as a premier destination for botanical studies and public engagement, attracting approximately one million visitors annually.
