Star Yerba Mate
As a German you can not imagine how happy I was seeing that there are Mate Tea stores popping up in the recent time. Although Mate Tea comes from South America, and I guess a few of south Americans in Guangzhou are happy as well, Germans love their “Club Mate” a lovely energizing softdrink that took me through university.
After my first high from realizing that this exists in China, came a curious concern. Will China let me down and will it be just another sugar sweet drink? So I took my slippers and went with bruised feet to the store and tried it.
The choices are many, which is great and because just walking makes you sweat in Guangzhou summer, I had chosen the Mate Tea with coconut water for some electrolytes.
The taste instantly brought back lots of memories and I will surely come back to Star Mate, every time I am in the area.
The store is very small and hidden right behind the entrance of Baihui Plaza. They do not have any seats and just sell drinks for on the go. Which is ok as they are located in an area with many historical sites that are much more easy to walk through with a cold Mate Tea in hand.
