10 Fragrances Garden (十香园纪念馆)
Sometimes you can find great places just around the corner. I have been running past the river where ten fragrances garden is located for at least 5 years and always told myself “I should visit it some day”. Turns out I should have done that years ago, because it is beautiful!
Entering the Garden you will first be greeted with a wide entryway pathed on both sides with the usual well planted trees and flowers, but also sculptures.
Going further inside you can enter several buildings. One, which is the main building of ten fragrances garden in Guangzhou, is a gallery that exhibits the artwork of Ju Lian and Ju Chao. I found that the paintings capture movement really well.
Inside the other halls you can find sculpture exhibitions as well as a museum showing how the artists worked and lived in Guangzhou.
The ten fragrances garden memorial hall was built around 1856, it was the residence and studio of Ju Lian and Ju Chao, two great bird-and-flower painters of the late Qing dynasty. The garden is named after the ten fragrant flowers planted there, including jasmine, ylang-ylang, and night-blooming jasmine, which gave the site its poetic title.
For Lingnan School of Painting, the garden holds a unique place in art history, with luminaries such as Gao Jianfu and Chen Shuren receiving early training there. Today, the memorial hall features reconstructed elements in the traditional Five Dynasties architectural style, such as a gate tower and a stone tablet corridor. Visitors can explore the surroundings and learn about Lingnan art and its masters.
