Min Kee Clay Pot Rice (民记煲仔饭)
This restaurant was the first thing my wife answered me after I asked her for recommendations of Restaurants in Guangzhou. In fact there is one right next to her former office and she used to go there as often as possible. Clay Pot rice is an old cooking method were the Rice will become crispy on the bottom of the “clay pot” after being heated over fire, making the last few bites a crunchy delight.
Min Kee Clay Pot especially comes with fair amount of meat on top as well as a generally large enough portion. Also, not all restaurants manage to have that “crispy” last layer of rice on bottom of the clay pot, which is what you do not want to miss. Min Kee does have this.
If you are in an area where one of these Clay Pot restaurants in Guangzhou is located, 100% go and have one. You also do not need to be afraid, as the ingredients are somewhat “normal”. Most of the time it is simply rice topped with pork or other meat in a brown sauce and a few steamed vegetables on top.
