Temple of the Six Banyan Trees

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees or Liurong Temple is close to the center of old Canton China and within the old cities walls. The Temple is still home to the Buddhist community and very active as a center of religion but also tourism as is the whole area.

The calmness of not only the temple, but also the area on a weekday noon can be very relaxing compared to other parts of Guangzhou. We definitely recommend to choose a time outside the peak visitor hours.

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, or Liurong Temple, traces its origins to AD 537 in Guangzhou, China. Initially constructed to house relics of Cambodian Buddhist saints, the temple has endured fires and reconstructions over the centuries. Renamed after Su Shi’s famous poem, the Flower Pagoda, built in 1097, remains its iconic feature. Despite challenges, including a fire during the early Ming dynasty and reconstruction in 1900, the temple stands as a symbol of Guangzhou’s rich Buddhist heritage and spiritual significance.
